Thinking Of Fitting A
Second Hand / Cheap Unit
Think Again !!!!!
As Cars get more and more
reliant on Electronics here's a couple of cautionary tales.
Ford Focus
The owner of this ford
Focus decided to purchase a second hand Alternator for his car. he
saved around £ 50.00 over the price of a new unit. Not having the
knowledge to fit it himself asked a friend to help and paid him £
20.00. Job Done.
A couple of days later
he noticed a strange smell after 30 or so minutes driving, had a
quick glance under the bonnet all seemed in place didn't think to
much of it.
By the weekend the car failed to
start... the owner was puzzled and decided to pay a visit to his
local Garage. The news was not good !!
The garage informed him that the
alternator was Over charging producing 16volts consistently. This
had literally boiled the battery dry and buckled the plates .
The Owner ended up purchasing a new
alternator, a new battery and had to pay for the fitting of the new
alternator. He estimated that the episode cost him over £ 100.00 on
top of what he would have paid for a new alternator on it's own.
Vauxhall Astra
This vehicle arrived
at the garage on the back of a breakdown truck refusing to start due
to a flat battery. The owner lived some 300 miles away and was
visiting relatives.
He informed the garage
that he had recently had the alternator repaired by his local Auto -
Electrician. The diagnostics test carried out by the garage showed
that the alternator was not producing any charge.
A new unit was fitted
, battery recharged and the car was back to full running order.
The owner however had
paid for the original repair and labour £ 78.00 + VAT and paid the
garage for the new unit to be supplied and fitted.
